Awesome Autumn

Mommy & Houston enjoying the beautiful fall foliage!

Houston has been enjoying his first fall. (Click here for recent pics.) The weather had been unseasonably warm (70s), so we had been still been spending quite a bit of time outdoors during the daylight hours, taking walks, exploring the back part of our property, watering some of our very thirsty plants (yes, the drought rages on), rocking on the front porch, etc. It finally turned cold today, but we still went for a walk. I bought this cool fleece cover that goes over Houston’s baby carrier, car seat and stroller. It’s kind of like a sack with a large opening in the back, so that you can easily fit it over whatever mode of transportation you happen to have him in, and then it has an adjustable belt around the top, so that it doesn’t slip off. There’s plenty of room inside of it, so he can still kick and move about, but it wraps up under him, keeping him nice and toasty warm without slipping off. I tell ya, there’s a lot of crap out there for kids, but this was an excellent purchase — worth every penny! Plus, now I don’t have to go out and buy Houston a coat or a bunch of other winter clothes that he’ll wear for all of a month or two before growing out of them. Speaking of which, that wild boy is pretty much wearing 6-9 month clothes; anything smaller just won’t cut it anymore (note to Gramsey and Granny, if y’all are planning on getting him any clothes for Christmas).
I decided to cut Houston back down to one solid feeding a day ’cause his poops were just not coming out as easily as they had been. I guess I overloaded his teeny digestive system. Poor thing has his first case of diaper rash ’cause he almost always has a little turd in his diaper, even soon after a change. I’m anal (pardon the pun) about checking and changing, but sometimes I just cannot keep up, and then those little bastards sit in there, making his bum all red and sore. I seems like he just can’t get it all out when he needs to. I feel so horrible, but hopfeully tweaking things will fix the problem. He did, however, love his one and only dose of fruit: prunes! I may still squeeze those in on occasion till he gets his poop back under control. I suppose this won’t be the last mistake I make … being a mom is tough, ain’t it?!
On a totally random note, I was in the Taco Bell drive-through line tonight and as I pulled up to the window to pay for my grub, the cashier says, “The man in front of you paid for your food and said to to wish you a Merry Christmas!” I was taken aback by the stranger’s kindness. I think the Taco Bell chick was touched, as well. It made my night and also made me the bullet-proof happy chick during my errands. I hope my smiles and joy made somebody else feel good. Just goes to show that the Christmas spirit is still alive and well!

Houston’s Big Day

Big-boy Houston as a vampire slayer!

Houston had his 4-month check-up today. He handled his vaccinations like such a big, strong boy, and laughed, talked and kicked throughout his entire appointment (minus during the shots, of course). He now weighs 17.7 pounds, he’s 26 3/8″ long and his head is 17 1/4″ around. Those stats put him in both the 95% category for both height and weight. Yes, he’s going to be a tall one for sure! The above photo is actually from late September, but it’ll help you get the drift of how he’s shaping up.
While getting Houston dressed for his appointment, he finally discovered his toes! I had been trying to show him his feet for a while now, but he just hadn’t been interested. He would much rather eat his hands by sticking his entire fist into his mouth, while drooling like a mad man. We’ll have to see if he remembers where his feet are and if he discovers how much fun they can be to play with when you’re a limber baby!
Another first for Houston happened today: he ate his first veggie! I took video of it, so you’ll get to see that soon enough. But suffice it to say that he was quite skeptical of the whole thing. He has just recently gotten into his daily rice cereal feeding (which I think he initially saw as cutting into his trusty breastmilk stash), thus, Gerber carrots were quite shocking to his palate. He ate about a tablespoon, though, so I don’t think we’ll have a problem getting him into yummy pureed foods. And in addition to sustenance, they can also provide entertainment — kinda like finger paints!

More Fun in the Holy City

We’re leaving Charleston tomorrow and have plans to head back into town one more time to visit the United Daughters of Confederacy Museum. We tried to visit there yesterday, but they have limited hours and were closed. So, we tooled around the Old Slave Market, which begins just behind the museum. There, we found some cool Civil War stuff and bought Dr. and Mrs. Levin a little thank-you gift for letting us stay at their wonderful condo for nearly a week. It was our 7-year anniversary, so we dined out at a swanky restaurant called Hank’s, which specializes in low country cuisine. Although quite expensive (my bottle of mineral water was $6), it was a nice place. Houston, who had been virtually perfect up until this point, decided he didn’t want to nap and was thus a whining, squirming little mongrel. I tried to get him to fall asleep by taking him outside of the restaurant and rocking him, but that didn’t work. So Stephen took him for a walk in the stroller. That didn’t work either, but Houston eventually drifted off as I rocked him inside the restaurant in his stroller. We were able to finish our meals and get some yummy desserts. I do believe Houston is simply worn out from all the fun we’ve had. He has slept through the night great, but has napped sporadically and only for very short periods of time. I think my boy will be glad to get back home, as will Stephen and I. Charleston has been a blast, but we’ve run ourselves ragged and still haven’t done all the things we wanted to do, like visit the USS Yorktown, tour some of the old houses and churches downtown, as well as the nearby plantations. I suppose we’ll just have to come back again!
