“Dost thou love life?”

“… Then do not squander time, for that’s the stuff life is made of.” — Benjamin Franklin

Going, going, going has been our lifestyle this summer, and we haven’t let Houston’s injury slow us down. Just because you have a bum elbow and a cast doesn’t mean you can’t still have a good time, right?!

First, let me update y’all on Houston’s arm. He had an orthopedic check-up on 7/29 and the x-ray showed that his elbow is healing exceedingly well. Amazingly, the doc said Houston will get his pins removed at the next appointment on 8/6.

Gabriel, seen here gently petting a butterfly, recently told me, “Mommy, I hope I die when you die, so that we can go to heaven together.” My sensitive boy sure knows how to melt his mama’s heart.

Houston will also be fitted with a hard, removable cast and visit the physical therapist that day. Not sure exactly what that means — Can he swim? Take a normal shower? Go most of the day sans cast? Get back to climbing? — but I do know this is exciting news and we’ll just sort out the details later.

Needless to say, Houston is ecstatic about breaking out of the shackles of his cast and getting back the use of his elbow and hand. Although he did recently admit, “I like breaking my arm because people give me a lot of attention.”

Somehow, I think Houston will survive without being in the limelight. Plus, that boy has got some tough physical therapy to work through before life gets back to normal.

We’ve had to get a little creative with the kids’ activities, since Houston can’t get his cast wet. But as long as the 3 Amigos are on the move, they’re happy as clams.

On 7/24, Houston went to see a dollar movie with the J-Crew. However, Miss Christie misread her calendar (yeah, it’s hard to keep up with the days during summer), so she took the kiddos to play at the park and Chick-fil-A instead.

Despite a left arm that he can’t fully utilize, Houston hangs in there building his craft @ the Lowe’s Build & Grow workshop.

Gabriel and Zeke were a tad envious at first. But then I reminded me that they had been to both a pool party and Bounce-U the week before without big bro and that seemed to allay their jealousy.

Miss Julie, Houston’s piano teacher, hosted a summer piano party for all of her students on 7/25. Houston didn’t want to go, as he was embarrassed that he couldn’t play a song.

It took some convincing from Daddy and me that Miss Julie didn’t expect him to perform and that all the other kids wouldn’t think he was weirdo. Houston hesitantly agreed to attend, but was particularly crabby upon arrival ’cause his fingers had been hurting that day.

Well, turns out that Houston had a blast, as we knew he would, and forgot all about his finger pain and incapacitated arm once he was at the shindig. In fact, when the twins and I picked him up, Houston was jamming out an impromptu one-armed ditty on the piano for Miss Julie!

Zeke’s up to bat during a post-cookout baseball game w/ the J-Crew. (By the looks on their faces, the other boys don’t much like waiting for their turn at the plate.)

The next day, the kids and I hooked up with Miss Beth, Matthew and Jonathan, who we haven’t seen in ages. The boys played outside at their house, while Beth and I caught up mommy stuff.

Then we went to see Wild Goose Chase Theater at their local library. It’s a pirate-themed puppet show (good) that runs about 45 minutes (hmm, perhaps not so good). But to our delight, our typically hyper kids were calm, mannerly and totally enamored with the performance.

Beth and I were somewhat anxious about the boys sitting up front with all the other children void of parental supervision. But even from our seats a few rows back, it was easy to see that our 5-dude crew (ranging from ages 3-6) were the best-behaved kids in the group. Way to go, boys!

However, their conduct wasn’t quite as good at the Japanese restaurant where we had dinner and made a gazillion trips to the bathroom. Then the constant peeing and pooping continued and some additional zaniness kicked in during our visit to a frozen-yogurt joint for dessert.

Gramsey & Papa fool around w/ the 3 Amigos during the obligatory “grandparents w/ grandkids” photo opp during their recent visit.

But hey, they are testosterone-filled boys after all. Could we really expect anything less than some eventual hijinks, especially since the dudes contained all their horseplay at the library?!

On 7/27, Stephen took the 3 Amigos to their first Lowe’s Build & Grow, which is a free workshop for kids. The boys got to use hammers, nails, glue and other crafty tools to put together a wooden car, with Daddy’s help, of course.

Each one was so proud of his creation, and Stephen was pleased with their excellent behavior. That means, there will likely be another boys-only outing to Lowe’s some time soon. Great job, fellas!

That evening, we had the entire J-Crew over for a rainy-day cookout. Although we had to eat dinner inside, the weather cleared up enough that we were able to spend some time outside playing baseball and kickball. Good times with some of favorite folks!

Piper, Gabriel & Jackson enjoy the swimming portion of G-Man’s sleepover w/ the J-Crew.

After church the next day, Mercy Hill had a baptism cookout. It’s exactly what it sounds like: people getting baptized and then everyone chowing down. There was also an inflatable slide and a bounce house for the kids. It was a fun get-together and a nice opportunity to get to know of some of the congregants.

Gramsey and Papa came to town from 7/29-7/30. They hadn’t seen Houston since his injury nor had they been to our house in a while, so it was wonderful to host them for a couple days of bonding with the grandkids, political chats and eating yummy food. Thanks for the visit!

On 7/31, the boys and I met Miss Jessie and her little sister, Kaylee, at the Science Center. We did the aquarium, the zoo and another omni-sphere show called Sea Monsters. This flick was 3D, longer than the one we saw the week before and intended for kids ages 7 and up, but the 3 Amigos again impressed with their big-boy behavior.

The next day, Gabriel had his first sleepover with a friend. It was with the J-Crew and he was Jackson’s guest. Miss Christie reports that G-Man said “thank you … please … sir … ma’am” and was up to par on all the rest of the mannerly stuff.

So, after we have Asher or Jax over to spend the night, it’ll then be Zeke’s turn for a sleepover at the J-Crew casa. And Z-Bird’s already planning for the highly anticipated event!

Zeke, Houston & Gabriel imitate the bum-spanking dance moves from their current favorite movie, “Despicable Me.” I suppose it will remain their top preoccupation, until we finally go to see Part 2 at the theater in a few weeks.

Last but not least, the 3 Amigos are obsessed with Despicable Me. We rented the movie last weekend and they just thought it was the best. They decided that it would be money well spent to each contribute $3.33 from their piggy banks in order to purchase it from Amazon Instant Video.

Since then, the boys have watched the movie many times, choosing it above all else as their daily limited TV viewing. Their zeal for the flick has been so intense that they already know much of the dialog and even some scenes word-for-word in just a week’s time.

The dudes are not only infatuated with the goofy characters and story, but they love the music, most notably the disco songs from the soundtrack. So, I showed them John Travolta’s dance performance to the Bee Gees’ You Should Be Dancing from Saturday Night Fever.

It’s not rare to find the boys (especially Gabriel) shamelessly boogying, attempting to mimick Gru’s dance moves to the same song from the Despicable Me, as well as Travolta’s funky grooves of yore. These passionate performances are truly something to behold!

A grateful heart

Houston went for his first post-hospital orthopedic check-up on 7/18. It was a rough appointment for him, getting the old cast sawed and pried off, an x-ray done sans any cast, and his bright-red hard cast put on.

But Houston was a trooper. The orthopedist said that the intense finger pain he has been experiencing intermittently (usually at night) is normal, since those nerves are so closely tied to the elbow. The doc added that Houston should feel a greater sense of comfort and relief with each passing day.

Mommy & the dudes hang w/ the penguins @ the brand-new SciQuarium.

And most importantly, the x-ray showed that his elbow is healing extremely well, especially considering how severe was the break. Thank God!

I mean, just to think about the close calls we’ve had with the 3 Amigos’ health … Houston’s Horner’s Syndrome, Gabe and Zeke’s Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome, Zeke’s CCAM and lobectomy, now Houston’s elbow. My heart just overflows with gratitude for prayers answered and awe of the Lord.

Before the hard cast, I decided to let Houston go to the Children’s Museum on the first day of Mercy Hill’s Kids Week on 7/16. I was apprehensive since it was a drop off, but I was confident he could handle the outing, since he was with brothers and responsible adults whose rules and guidelines he’s used to following at church.

Amazingly, Houston can still do Legos even w/ a broken elbow & a hard cast.

But the next day’s Mercy Hill activity was a pool party. Of course, I didn’t want to torture the poor kid by taking him, so Houston hung out with the J-Crew that morning and went to see a dollar movie instead. Thanks, Miss Christie!

That way, I was able to volunteer for the event and at least let Gabriel and Zeke see their church friends and continue the week’s Bible lessons. Plus, I don’t want the twins’ swimming to come to a total halt just ’cause big bro can’t get his arm wet, so we’re working it where we can.

Gabriel & Zeke enjoy an impromptu hug & Mommy actually catches the shot!

The last day of Kids Week was at BounceU and coincided with the orthopedic appointment. Gabe and Zeke got to enjoy some jumping and sliding, while Daddy and I took Houston to the doc.

Since the hard cast, I’m not as anxious about Houston getting out and about. We went to the Science Center last Friday to see an omni-sphere movie and take brothers to the newly opened aquarium in the morning. That evening, the dudes attended a “Brave” party at Miss Christie’s house.

Gabriel questions the eye placement for his horse craft made @ Mercy Hill’s Kids Week.

Houston is a bit more mobile, too, being able to enjoy more typical child’s play, like running, pretend play, sandbox fun, etc. Hence, we have some more jaunts planned for later in the week and hope to keep things as normal as possible while Houston endures this lengthy healing process.

Kids Week was a great opportunity for me to get to meet and know better some of the other Mercy Hills parents and children. And it was a phenomenal learning experience for the twins.

The lessons were cowboy-themed, which obviously was a big hit with Gabe and Zeke. The gist was that God made Saul into a follower of Jesus, so the outlaw became a cowboy. And Jesus, the great rancher, always ensures this his cows and cowboys (followers of Christ) are cared for. Cool, huh?!

Zeke reaches for a stingray in the SciQuarium petting tank, but the fish weren’t feeling too friendly that day.

Moreover, if the kids memorized a Bible verse, they got to swing at a cowboy-boot piñata on the final day. Gabe and Zeke were quite inspired by the possibility of hitting the papier-mâché container filled with candy, so they quickly learned and recited the verse.

Random happy news: I have been backyard power walking for a few months now and also counting my calories since early June and have lost about 15 pounds. I still have a ways to go to get to my target weight, but needless to say, I am psyched!

Comic relief

Well, on Asgard, Thor doesn’t need to go to the doctor. But here on planet earth, that seems to be a lot of what the folks I love have been doing lately.

First of all, my 49-year-old sister, Lisa, had a minor heart on 5/1. She’s recovering quickly, thank God; but as it turns out, her cardiac issues (plaque build up in the arteries) are hereditary and apparently run in my mom’s side of the family.

This is news to us, though, ’cause my mother is adopted and knows pretty much nothing about her bio family, least of which, medical history. So we’re just now starting to figure out all this heart stuff.

Houston hangs out w/ Norse god, Thor, & his mighty hammer, Mjölnir, @ Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 4.

And then yesterday, my 46-year-old sister, Dina, had to be rushed to the hospital due to an intense dizzy spell. She has been known to have these alarming episodes on occasion, and again, thank the Lord, she is doing well now.

All these scares are beginning to freak me out, with all my weird, random health issues and the extra 40 pounds I’m lugging around. I’d better get into shape soon — then again, my genetics may be such that I should live it up while I’m still able. Ain’t that a pickle?!

Speaking of genes, Houston has inherited sleep apnea from Daddy, Grumps and Papa. As mentioned in the 3/30 blog, Houston has visited an ENT to check out his enlargened adenoids and tonsils, and we have since determined that he has minor case of the sleep disorder.

Gabriel, who confidently filled the role of Ladies’ Man @ Acme Comics’ biggest annual event, poses w/ a friendly Black Widow.

So, we finally decided to move forward with Houston’s surgery (removal of the aforementioned lymphoids), which is scheduled for 5/20. We’re not taking this procedure lightly, but we do think it is in Houston’s best interest to try to remedy his maladies while he’s young and while we still have access to quality healthcare.

Then during a routine dental cleaning on 5/6, I found out I need to have an old, stained filling repaired, as well as a tiny hole filled in one of my top incisors. That imperfection has been present for who knows how long … probably dates back to my days on Dead tour.

While I’m at my upcoming appointment, I’m going to get an updated cast made of my teeth so the doc can construct a new and improved night guard for me. Turns out, I do have slight TMJ, which is certainly a contributor to those bizarre, surging head pains I was getting a while back.

Houston & Daddy stand w/ Thanos, the Mutant Eternal & carrier of the Deviant’s gene. Like Thanos, Houston has some (sleep apnea) gene issues, so please keep him in your prayers during his adenoid/tonsil removal on 5/20.

The custom-fit mouth piece with TMJ-specifications will replace my five-year-old guard and should help in limiting the negative effects of my severe nighttime teeth grinding. I hope I won’t have to have any major dental work done for a while. Man, getting old’s lame.

We’ve been visiting a new church since early April. We love Westover and have grown spiritually in our near two years there, but I felt the need to test the waters at some of our city’s other wonderful houses of worship, namely a small, but vibrant church called Mercy Hill.

Stephen has been supportive of my yearning to seek out a church that it just a bit more personal, but steadfast in his loyalty to Westover, which did a great job of reaching out to our family. It’s just we never felt 100% connected there — really a daunting task for any church as large and populated as Westover.

Even though the Joker was lurking around, Gabriel & Zeke feel safe in the presence of the Dark Knight himself, Batman.

Mercy Hill is a new church plant, not even a year old. Theologically, it’s on the same page as Westover: an unapologetic and passionate gospel-centered church. But something about the energy at Mercy Hill is contagious.

We’re still not sure what we’re going to do yet. Westover is wonderful, especially the pastor and the children’s ministries. But Mercy Hill also has a great pastor and growing Sunday-school program for kids.

I just feel like we might be able to get plugged into a small Bible study and/or accountability community group a bit easier at Mercy Hill. Either way, we’re going to end up at a phenomenal church and we’re blessed to have such exceptional choices in our our neck of the woods.

Granny & Obi-Wan Kenobi (& a grinning Uncle Greg peeking between the two) make the most of the long line while waiting for this year’s free comic-book stash.

We opted to attend Mercy Hill today. For one, Stephen and I stayed up late last night and Westover has a morning services, whereas Mercy Hill has one in the evening. Second, Houston wanted to turn in his “Blessings Journal.”

Houston’s Mercy Hill homework was to write down (daily for one week) things for which he is thankful. Here are the results:

  1. Gabe and Zeke
  2. Asher
  3. Piano
  4. God
  5. Kara
  6. Mom and Dad
  7. Homeschooling

Tony Stark (looking dashing, as always) & me (blinking in a photo, as always) enjoy a sunny day @ Acme Comics. Hey, maybe Iron Man can build a device to help me keep my eyes open during pictures.

Noticeably, God didn’t place first. Hmm. And then on the sixth day, Houston’s original choice was “dairy farms.” I had been patient up till then, but c’mon … I’m not going to let my kid’s love of milk outweigh what should be a grateful attitude toward loving parents.

Thankfully, Daddy softened Houston’s occasional hard heart toward school and gently inspired him into choosing #7 as my Mother’s Day gift. Stephen says it was totally Houston’s choice, but I appreciate you planting the seed, baby!

The other gift I want is for the 3 Amigos to learn to say “ma’am” as habit. We’ve been working on the sir-ma’am thing for a long time now, so it’s high time the boys exhibit at least the bare minimum of manners as second nature. We’re making progress, but we’re not there yet.

Gabriel & Houston are pretty worn out from the day’s zaniness, whereas Zeke is just getting rolling here in this pose w/ Iron Man. See, Zeke was bummed about Spidey not being @ the event, so he didn’t really get into the groove till late in the day.

Stephen treated me like a queen all weekend. First, he took me out for a date night on Friday, while Jessie babysat the 3 Amigos. I had a delightful time with my hubby, enjoying a nice dinner downtown and a few drinks, while the dudes had good times with Miss J, who they hadn’t seen since March.

Then late last night, Stephen began cooking me my Mother’s Day feast: smoked pork-butt, chicken and potatoes. Sure, he had to start smoking the BBQ at 2 a.m., but hey, I’m worth it! Seriously, thanks for a memorable dinner with the family, Beeler!

Gramsey and Papa couldn’t make it to Grumps’ memorial, so they came to visit the day we got back from the mountains. The dudes were really excited to see them, so that helped them out in transitioning back to “normal life” around the home, and also gave Stephen and me a much-needed break.

Gabriel, who is a MAJOR fan Captain America fan, is on cloud nine when he gets to hold the original Avenger’s mighty shield.

Then after Gramsey and Papa hit the road the next day, Miss Christie took the boys for a few hours to give Stephen and me a chance to unwind from all hectic happenings of that past week. It’s great to have such wonderful family and friends … thanks, y’all!

Late April also offered up an evening with Lisa Bailey, who is the CC state manager. It was an informal pep talk for the moms in my CC community. Lisa talked about practical ways to  keep up with summer homeschooling and our all-around classical education goals. Never hurts to take part in a little motivational therapy!

Houston went to a piano party at Miss Julie’s on 5/3. It was a students-only affair and I didn’t have anyone to watch the twins, so I urged an apprehensive Houston to attend solo. His teacher assured me that she would make him feel right at home and mentioned the fact that Mikey, a CC buddy, was also going to be at the party.

Houston compares his biceps to no other than the green giant himself, the Incredible Hulk.

Turns out, Houston had a blast and didn’t want to leave when we came to pick him up. Julie says he was even one of the first kids to volunteer to play a couple pieces of music, regardless of the fact that he’s only had a few lessons … so much for unsocialized homeschoolers, eh?!

At a recent used-curriculum sale, I ran into Kim, the former midwife who just so happens to be the one who birthed Houston into the world. I knew she was a homeschool mom from a prior but brief CC encounter; but this event actually gave us a chance to chat, so of course, we talked about that momentous moment nearly six years ago.

Funny thing is Kim’s most vivid memory wasn’t my horrendous 34-hour labor and delivery or Houston’s beautiful newborn gaze; rather, it was Granny and the Texas dirt we put under the bed. Granny does have a way of leaving an impression on people … classic.

So on that note, happy Mother’s Day to all you uniquely awesome mamas!
